There is a growing body of evidence to support the idea that our lives can be greatly and measurably enhanced by listening to certain types of music. This is due to a process known as brainwave entrainment (BWE). In the simplest terms possible, brainwave entrainment is the tendency for brainwaves (the electro-chemical oscillations that occur between neurons) to synchronize with the rhythms of external frequencies – whether auditory, visual, or tactile.
BWE can be verified by analyzing electroencephalogram (EEG) results, and the science behind it is rather concrete. BWE is a very real phenomenon, and its effects on human cognition and performance are easily measurable and quite striking.
One of the easiest ways to induce BWE in test subjects is through exposure to particular types of music – music commonly referred to as binaural beats (think Hemi-Sync) and isochronic tones.
In tests where BWE was induced using these particular sounds and sound patterns, scientists have measured specific, repeatable changes in intelligence, physical well-being, and emotional health.
Increased Intelligence and Creativity
In a research paper published in 1991 by Dr. Siegfried Othmer, President of the Neurofeedback Division of the Association for Applied Psychophysiology and Biofeedback, he reported that the research conducted with his colleagues displayed significant measurable improvements in test subjects’ IQ while in a BWE state induced by binaural beats. In fact, the average IQ increase was an astonishing 23%. For subjects with an IQ less than 100 before the test, the average increase was 33 points!
The paper also reported “dramatic improvements in visual retention, auditory memory, reading and arithmetic.
A follow-up study conducted a year later found that subjects showed long-lasting improvements in self-esteem, concentration, organization, and handwriting.
Genius Brain Power
A program designed to leverage the power of brainwave entrainment, the Genius Brain Power Mind Expansion System uses binaural beats and isochronic tones to train your brain for clarity, increased IQ, and creativity.
The program was developed to promote long-term cognitive improvements through brainwave entrainment. The creators offer a free sample on their website, if you would like to hear this music for yourself.
Enhanced Physical Well-Being
In another study conducted by Dr Vincent Giampapa, MD, Former President of the American Board of Anti-Aging Medicine, New England Journal of Medicine, a number of discoveries were made regarding the effects of brainwave entrainment on the physical body. Dr. Giampapa measured dramatic changes in the production of three specific hormones related to longevity and general health: cortisol, DHEA, and melatonin.
Cortisol is produced by the adrenal glands and is closely associated with stress. It has been found to have a negative impact on learning and memory. Studies have shown that BWE reduces cortisol levels by an average of 46%!
DHEA is considered a primary ingredient of virtually every beneficial hormone the body produces, and has been shown to help the immune system. Studies have shown that BWE increases DHEA levels by an average of 43%!
Melatonin is produced during periods of deep, natural sleep, and is associated with stress reduction and feelings of calm and tranquility. Studies have shown that BWE increases melatonin levels by a staggering average of 98%!
Additional research by Dr Margaret Patterson and Dr Ifor Capel of the Marie Curie Cancer Foundation Research Department found that Alpha brainwave states induced by binaural beats increased the production of serotonin, which is an essential hormone for pain relief and relaxation.
The Unexplainable Store
The Unexplainable Store offers users many products that employ audio brainwave stimulation to promote pain relief, remedy headaches, cure insomnia, and provide many other benefits through targeted stimulation of brainwaves.
Their website provides tons of free samples if you are interested in hearing how binaural beats and isochronic tones are used to promote health and healing.
Improved Emotional Health
Numerous studies have been published on the use of brainwave entrainment to reduce anxiety and treat depression. These studies have consistently shown significant reductions in anxiety and increases in general quality of life.
Some examples include: a research paper by Peniston and Kulkosky published in 1989 on the benefits of audio brainwave stimulation for fighting depression in alcoholics – a study that was reinforced in a research paper by Waldkoetter and Sanders published in 1997, a study published in Alternative Therapy Health & Medicine in 2001 that reported significant reductions in anxiety scores among test subjects that used audio brainwave entrainment 5 times a week for 4 weeks, and a study published in the Journal of Alternative and Complimentary Medicine in 2007 about research conducted on 8 healthy adults over a 60 period that demonstrated measurable decreases in anxiety and increases in quality of life.
The MP3 Meditation Club
The MP3 Meditation Club has engineered dozens of isochronic meditation programs based on the findings from published brainwave entrainment studies. They use the exact frequencies cited for achieving specified outcomes, and test each program for effectiveness.
Their audio programs are specifically engineered to provide targeted benefits that include stress relief, improved memory, and more esoteric concepts like astral projection and lucid dreaming.
The science is voluminous and the results are consistent. Brainwave entrainment is a very real phenomenon that provides very real benefits, and it can be reliably induced through regular exposure to particular binaural beats and isochronic tones.
The effects on intelligence, physical health, and emotional well-being are undeniable. Of course, it stands to reason that if these techniques can be used to produce positive, beneficial states of altered consciousness, it may also be possible to induce negative, malignant states of altered consciousness. Perhaps this is the research that should be conducted next.
In the meantime, though, it’s probably a smart idea to use what science has discovered about this brainwave stimulating music to improve ourselves and our lives as much as possible.
